Four
Ways To Save Money With Your Depositions |
Tip
#1: Minimize Mistakes by Managing
Your Account Online
Managing your
account through an online website
allows you or your assistant to book
your job online at your convenience.
There is no need to waste time picking
up the phone. You will receive an
email confirmation of the specific
requirements of the job and this minimizes
any mistakes with the date, time,
or location for the deposition.
Most quality
court reporting companies also have
services where you can access your
transcripts online. If you are conducting
a deposition in New York, and you
need a transcript, simply access the
internet and retrieve the file.
Also, most lawyers
call their court reporting companies
the day before a job to confirm. That
takes time. Instead, you can simply
access your schedule online and view
exactly what lies ahead for your deposition
schedule.
Tip #2:
Minimize Errata Sheet Changes with
Audio or Video
There are two
simple ways to cure this all-too-frequent
problem:
-
First,
videotape the deposition.
This will allow you to have recorded
the actual testimony and use it
at trial for impeachment (ok, you
don’t need me to tell you
how to practice law!).
-
Second,
another cost effective means to
preserve the actual testimony is
to have the deposition recorded
by audio means. This is very
inexpensive and is done digitally.
If the witness makes a substantive
change, then you will have the actual
audio file to use for impeachment.
Tip #3:
Make Sure Your Record Is Accurate
In technical
depositions (i.e., medical, etc.),
consider making a word list of the
key technical words or phrases which
will be used throughout the deposition.
-
This
will save you time because the reporter
will not need to stop to get spellings.
-
It
will also improve the quality of
the transcript because spellings
will be accurate.
-
Providing
the word list and other related
information to the reporter prior
to your deposition will allow the
reporter to be well versed in the
difficult aspects of the job.
Essentially,
your court reporter waits until your
case is resolved before they are paid.
Also, many cases can continue for
several months or even years before
settlements or payouts are made. A
Line of Credit allows seamless service
for your depositions without stressing
about the cost. Remember, this is
not a contingency arrangement which
would violate the Rules of Professional
Conduct – but rather it is simply
a timing issue and is absolutely appropriate.
Lines of Credit are also used for
any services offered by your court
reporter (i.e., video, synchronization,
trial presentation, etc.)
